Picking a Theme for your Reception that will “WOW” your Guests

Trends come and go. Classics remain. We want to look back on your wedding and still love everything about it years from now. We also want your day to be about your love story, not someone else’s story (i.e. Harry Potter themed weddings….). Here are some ideas for choosing the perfect design for your day.

First, color palettes are important. Pictures will look more seamless. Guests will recognize the VIPs easier. Your day will have cohesion. You got engaged and you run to Pinterest. It’s overwhelming. Everything is beautiful. You find 42 pins of what you “must have”. Realize this…what you are finding are photos that are coming to the top of the algorithm because they have a certain number of views, usually 10,000. That means your “must have” list is also the “must have” list of 10,000 other brides minimum. And in order to reach that number the photo has been around for awhile, making it actually old news. What is trendy today may not be trendy next year when your wedding actually takes place. Several years ago I think I did 7 “navy and burgundy and blush” wedding palettes in the same season. I was on repeat. My recommendation is to hire a planner who can come up with a unique design, based on colors of the future, not the past.

Second, we do want a theme title to give the design cohesion. Something like, “sunset on the mountains” or “flower overkill” or “disco in the barn” are all themes I’ve worked with. Capturing the goal of the design helps everyone stay on track. Assure that everything you do ties into that design theme somehow. From attire, to venue choice, to invitation to linens….stick with your color palette and theme title.

Lastly, your venue has everything to do with your design. I’ve seen brides who choose a venue with red carpet and then a color palette of pastel pink and purple. This won’t work. Trying to pull off “disco in the barn” in an elegant hotel is like putting a square peg in a round hole. Have a solid idea of your color palette and theme title prior to choosing your venue. Or be open to selecting those items in coordination to the venue you chose.

Audrey Hepburn said, “Elegance is the only beauty that doesn’t fade.” When you’re creating your wedding design, you want an approach that you’ll fall in love with over and over, and when your kids look at your wedding album they’ll admire your hard work. Timeless. Beauty.
